Google actually showed Phenaki, the experimental function of “AI video generation”, turning imagination into video
Speaking of Google’s “Text to Video (Text to Video)” experimental feature Phenaki. In fact, they have been released quite a long time ago – mainly for the similar function of Meta at that time, Make-A-Video. During the period, although Google initially showed that this set of functions can complete the video through line-by-line text prompts (Prompt), the actual interface that this function will use, or what changes it can have, were all displayed in October last year. The foreshadowing left in it.
Recently, through the 60 Minutes program of CBS News, we visited the process of Google’s related technology demonstration, and we also saw the actual interface of Google Phenaki’s video generation function for the first time.
In this talk show, there are actually quite a few key points, such as Google CEO Sundar Pichai calling on government agencies to properly regulate the development of AI, etc., emphasizing doubts about the use of such tools for Deep Fake and other fake purposes. Because of this, Google has repeatedly emphasized that the systems they build will not produce human images – um… Or is it because of this that everyone doesn’t want to read the next introduction? (Eh, can’t it? Right?)

In short, the program not only tried Google Bard AI and image generation functions, but also Google Project Starline video experience. They also experimented with an AI-generated text-to-video feature codenamed Phenaki, which is widely believed to refer to Phenakistiscope.
Compared with the version demonstrated by Google last year, this demonstration is more inclined to the feeling of Imagen that can generate a few seconds of video – that is, the previously mentioned AI model that can only generate a few seconds of video. As can be seen from the video, Google Phenaki can generate four dynamic video content only by inputting text prompts.

Judging from the official demonstration “Golden retriever puppy with wings walks through a field filled with wild flowers. ’s face seems to be a little strangely deformed, but compared to the current results of hard-to-use image generation services to make a video frame by frame, Google Phenaki’s rendering of the background is relatively stable at least.
Based on Google’s previous demonstration and explanation, Phenaki should theoretically be able to generate a few minutes of video. Judging from the current interface, you will need to gradually generate a few seconds of video with text, and choose one of four to piece together the entire video. The power of Phenaki should be that it can make these changing fragments more coherent with each other. As for the demonstration of the complete output video, you can refer to the video shown by Google last year.
1/ From today’s AI@ event: we announced our Imagen text-to-image model is coming soon to AI Test Kitchen. And for the 1st time, we shared an AI-generated super-resolution video using Phenaki to generate long, coherent videos from text prompts and Imagen Video to increase quality. pic.twitter.com/WofU5J5eZV

Even in terms of AI chatbots and even AI image generation, Google currently seems to be relatively passive and backward. But when it comes to text-to-video conversion, they should also understand that they may have a certain degree of advantage. That’s why you keep releasing related developments, right? I don’t know whether other AI opponents such as OpenAI will soon come up with similar demonstrations or even preempt Google and provide them to consumers? You can look forward to it.
