Representatives Ilhan Omar (Democrat), Adam Schiff (Democrat-California) and Eric Swalwell (Democrat-California) ran after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-California) on Sunday. Democrats withdrew from House committees. (You can see the Democrats on CNN below.)
The three appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss McCarthy’s blocking of Schiff and Swalwell from their Intelligence Committee seats last week. McCarthy claimed plausible security reasons for not allowing the two on the committee, but it was clearly retaliation for the Democrats’ removal of Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Arizona) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) from committee duties. I did. 2021 years.
Swalwell hasn’t been charged with being a Chinese intelligence agent, but he is known to be involved and tore McCarthy apart by telling Dana Bash on Sunday that he had “nothing”.
“This is Bakersfield BS,” said Swalwell, referring to McCarthy’s hometown in California. “It is Kevin McCarthy who is weaponizing his ability to commit this political abuse because he perceives me as an effective political opponent, like Mr. Schiff and Mr. Omar.”
McCarthy also promised to remove Omar from the Foreign Relations Committee, who had been accused by Republicans of being anti-Semitic. He could single-handedly refuse a seat on the Intelligence Committee, but McCarthy would need a House vote to remove Omar from the Foreign Office.
Omar, who has made it clear he has apologized for past comments, told HuffPost earlier this month that he saw no reason to remove McCarthy from the committee, other than that she is Muslim.
In an interview with Bash, Omar referred to Republican comments about Somali refugees, Muslims and himself.
“These people are okay with Islamophobia,” Omar said of Republicans.
The target of intense Islamophobic attacks by Republicans, Omar posting — and later apologized for — “All About the Benjamins” tweet regarding Republican support for Israel in 2019.
Bash later asked Schiff, who is Jewish, if Omar’s past comments had “elevated to anti-Semitic levels”. The California Democratic Party referred to the claims as “excuses”.
Schiff noted that former President Donald Trump dined with white nationalists and anti-Semites. He added that Greene, who spoke at a white nationalist rally, and others who had made racist comments were allowed to go to the committee by McCarthy.
“As a colleague of mine said, Bakersfield BS – these are all pretexts and I do not accept the premise that this has anything to do with the actions of the Democratic Congressman,” Schiff said.
“This is just a weakness in Kevin McCarthy’s public speaking ability where he relies too much on extreme members.”
