Indore (Madhya Pradesh): 78 year old veteran Indresh Chandra Purohit, now a Ratlam resident of Indore, won a bronze medal in doubles at the Oman Veteran Table Tennis Championships 2023 on 21 January. He and his partner beat Versang and Jacques of France. The 75-80 year category is required to qualify for a medal.
Purohit is a retired loco pilot from Rajdhani Express who retired in 2005 and served as a loco pilot in Iraq from 1988 to 1990.
He claims it is the first time a veteran has won a medal for India at the International Table Tennis Championships. He also added that in 1975, Deputy Minister of Railways Buta Singh awarded him 50 rupees for riding a train he was driving.

Purohit started his journey at the school itself and played in Nationals in 1962 at Imphal, Manipur.
In the 2012 tournament in Stockholm, Sweden, he made it to the pre-quarter. In 2016, they competed in the singles and doubles finals in Alicante, Spain. In 2018, he won gold medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the 70-year-old team event at the South Asian Veteran Table Tennis Championships held in Penang, Malaysia. Along with this, he won seven national championships.
